The new part single storey, part two storey George Palmer Primary School was designed to replace the existing two Victorian teaching blocks on the site and combine them into one new teaching facility.

The new school was located on the site to enable the continued use of the Victorian School Buildings whilst construction was undertaken. This relocating of the new school buildings on the site also enabled the eventual demolition of the existing buildings and the release of land on the site to be create new playground areas for the new school with land surplus to requirements to be sold off to a housing association to generate capital receipts to contribute to the construction costs of the new school.
